Positive reinforcement-based training for companion animals has become a passion for me. I am dedicated to the use and promotion of this form of training. Positive reinforcement-based training is effective, a great deal of fun, and best of all, creates an amazing bond between animal and owner.
I was an "old fashioned" (choke chain) trainer until I adopted my dog Charlie. Charlie was confiscated for cruelty and taken to our local animal care and control. He responded to my only known style of training with utter panic. The first positive reinforcement group with which I worked with did not explain why or how positive training worked. Since I came from a punitive-based background, I really needed to understand the concepts before I could embrace the training. Happily, I was introduced to a well respected local clicker trainer who explained the concepts to me. With her assistance and knowledge, Charlie and I have come a very long way.
Charlie and I have now worked through most of our major problems; a few remaining hurdles are being actively addressed. After working through the rehabilitation process with Charlie, doing a significant amount of research regarding positive training, and working with troubled dogs, I felt I had enough information to start giving back to the community. In March 2009, I founded a clicker program at our local animal care and control agency (currently on hiatus). I provide in-home training assistance with a focus on addressing behavioral concerns.
I am dedicated to continuing education and have attended seminars by Jean Donaldson, Lynn Seibert, and Pat Miller. I addented the Clicker Expo conference in Lexington Kentucky in 2010, and am signed up to attend again in 2011. I have also completed two internships with Pat Miller at Peaceable Paws.
